An Instagram shadowban is when your posts stop being shown to people who do not follow you, without any warning or message. Instagram does not use the word, but it does limit recommendations for accounts and posts that break its rules. The good news is that you can now check this directly in the app, and in most cases fix it within days.
This guide explains what is really happening, how to test your account, how long restrictions last and what to change.
What a shadowban actually is
Instagram has two kinds of visibility:
- To your followers, through Feed and Stories.
- To everyone else, through Explore, Reels, hashtag pages and suggested posts. Instagram calls this recommendations.
What people call a shadowban almost always means the second kind has been switched off. Your followers can still see your posts, but new people stop finding you. Reach drops sharply, hashtag views fall to almost nothing, and growth stalls.
Instagram publishes Recommendation Guidelines that list content it will not recommend, even when that content is allowed on the platform. Examples include sensational health claims, engagement bait, borderline nudity, and content from accounts that repeatedly post misleading information.
Instagram shadowban test: how to check your account
The official check
Instagram added a tool that answers the question directly.
- Open your profile and tap the menu.
- Go to Settings and activity → Account status.
- Look at What can't be recommended.
If you see a green tick, your account is eligible for recommendations. If anything is listed, Instagram shows which posts caused it and lets you remove them or request a review. This check is free, official and works for all account types.
Free hashtag searchability test checklist
If Account Status looks fine but reach still dropped, run this quick check:
- Post with one unique hashtag that nobody else uses.
- Ask a friend who does not follow you to search that hashtag.
- Wait an hour and check again.
If your post appears, your hashtags work. If it never appears, the hashtag may be broken or the post may be filtered.
Engagement drop audit
Some people look for an "Instagram shadowban calculator". No tool can measure a restriction from outside, but you can audit your own drop in Insights:
- Compare reach from non-followers over the last 30 days with the 30 days before.
- Check whether the fall happened on a specific day.
- Note what you posted or changed just before that day.
A sudden drop concentrated in non-follower reach suggests a recommendation limit. A gradual decline across all reach usually points to content fatigue instead.
Common causes
- Posts that break the Recommendation Guidelines. Even one flagged post can limit an account's recommendations for a while.
- Automation and third-party apps. Tools that like, follow, comment or unfollow on your behalf look like spam to Instagram's systems.
- Banned or broken hashtags. Some hashtags are hidden because they attracted spam. Using them can limit a post.
- Sudden spikes in activity. Following hundreds of accounts in an hour, or mass commenting the same phrase, triggers action limits.
- Reposted or watermarked content. Content clearly copied from elsewhere is less likely to be recommended.
- Repeated reports. Many reports in a short time can lead to a review and temporary limits.
How to fix an Instagram shadowban
- Open Account Status first. Remove any listed posts or request a review if you think the decision was wrong.
- Disconnect automation apps. Go to Accounts Center → Apps and websites and remove anything that acts on your behalf. Change your password afterwards.
- Review recent hashtags. Search each one. If a tag shows only top posts or a notice that posts are hidden, stop using it.
- Slow down. Keep follows, likes and comments to a natural pace for a week or two.
- Post original content. Upload your own footage without watermarks from other apps.
- Keep posting normally. Stopping completely does not speed recovery. Posting good, rule-friendly content shows the account is active and legitimate.
How long does an Instagram shadowban last?
There is no fixed length. Restrictions linked to a specific post usually lift once the post is removed or a review succeeds, often within a few days. Limits caused by automation or spam-like activity typically fade over one to two weeks once the behaviour stops.
Is an Instagram shadowban permanent?
Rarely. Permanent loss of reach only happens to accounts that keep breaking the rules after warnings, and those accounts usually face stronger action such as disabled features or removal. For a normal creator who fixes the cause, reach returns.
Keeping your account safe from now on
- Read the Recommendation Guidelines once. They are short and explain most limits.
- Check Account Status monthly, or whenever reach drops suddenly.
- Avoid tools that need your password. Legitimate services never ask for it.
- Grow at a believable pace. Sudden jumps in follows or engagement from low-quality accounts can draw attention.
If you decide to add views to a reel, choose a service that delivers gradually and only needs the link. Quick answers
Does a shadowban affect stories? Usually not. Stories are shown mainly to followers, so they continue as normal.
Will switching to a personal account remove a shadowban? No. Account type does not affect recommendation eligibility.
Can I contact Instagram about it? Use the review option in Account Status. It is the fastest official route.
